The city of Camas Parks & Recreation’s free Movies in the Park series returned to Crown Park on July 30, with a showing of “Onward,” and will continue with another free movie night on Friday, Aug. 20, with a showing of the 2019 Disney live remake of the classic “Lion King.”

The Aug. 20 movie night starts at 7:30 p.m. with pre-movie activities in Camas’ Crown Park. The movie, a live-action remake of the original animated version tells the same story of the young lion prince who, after the murder of his father, flees his kingdom only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery, begins at 8:30 p.m.

Camas’ Movies in the Park is in its 14th year, after a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and shows movies that are rated G or PG so the whole family can enjoy the festivities.

At the beginning of 2019, selected K-8 classrooms in the Camas School District were able to cast their votes for their favorite movies. The top two winning movies from that vote are the ones the city chose to share with the community this year.

Camas United Methodist Church sponsors the free Movies in the Park events.

The 2021 Movies in the Park will not feature a food vendor, so families are asked to plan ahead and bring their favorite dinner, movie snacks and drinks to the park. Food can also be purchased at Top Burger, located across the street from the park, or from a variety of restaurants in downtown Camas, located four blocks away from Crown Park. Participants also may bring chairs or blankets for seating, but should note that, to allow fair viewing, chairs are placed in one-half of the park viewing area and blankets in the other half.

Movies in the Park is a free event and no registration is required. Alcohol and animals are not allowed in Crown Park. Movies in the Park is coordinated by Camas Parks and Recreation.
