A Washougal man died last week as the result of a head-on collision inside the Washougal River Road traffic circle on state Highway 14.

According to Washington State Police, Michael Merwin, 60, of Washougal, was driving his 2016 Honda Accord west on Highway 14 around 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, when he entered the traffic circle at Washougal River Road from the wrong direction and collided head-on with an eastbound 1998 Dodge van driven by 64-year-old Thomas Wright of Vancouver.

Merwin was pronounced dead at the scene. Wright was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, where he was listed in satisfactory condition as of Sept. 22.

WSP said both men were wearing seatbelts, but have not yet determined if drugs or alcohol was involved in the collision.
